Islamabad: On the eve of Commonwealth Day 2025, the British High Commission spotlighted young Pakistani visionaries at an awards ceremony Friday, recognizing their artistic and narrative contributions to climate awareness through the ‘Climate in My Community’ initiative.
The competition, co-hosted with the British Council, invited youth aged 13–24 to submit original works—ranging from paintings and films to essays—capturing climate impacts on their communities and innovative solutions. Over 550 entries were received, reflecting a surge of youth engagement in environmental advocacy.
Winners across three categories—Sustainability and Innovation, Gender and Environment, and Local Climate Impact—were celebrated at the event, which featured an exhibition of their projects and panel discussions on youth-led climate action. Attendees included climate experts, policymakers, and diplomatic representatives.
British High Commissioner Jane Marriott commended the participants, stating, “The ingenuity and passion displayed in these entries are a testament to Pakistan’s youth, who are redefining the climate dialogue. Their voices resonate with urgency and hope, proving that creativity is pivotal to driving change.”
Roha Arshad, 20, winner in the Sustainability and Innovation category, shared, “While we await technological breakthroughs, nature itself holds the key. My film emphasizes harnessing existing resources to restore our planet—it’s our collective duty to act.” Other honorees included Khadija Chaudary, Rahma Mudassir, Gulshan Fatima, Hayder Ali, and Amaim Zia, aged 13–22, whose works addressed themes like gender-responsive solutions and community resilience.
Aligned with the 2025 Commonwealth Day theme, “Together We Thrive,” the event underscored collaboration in tackling global challenges. The UK reaffirmed its commitment to climate resilience in Pakistan, having already supported 1.5 million individuals against climate extremes and aiming to reach 3 million more by 2029. Additionally, UK-backed programs are projected to mobilize £420 million in climate investments, predominantly from private sectors.
This initiative highlights the UK’s focus on empowering youth and fostering sustainable development, bridging creative expression with actionable climate strategies.
