The Vigilant decided to document his work in its pages as successful Overseas Pakistani.

For over two decades, Shakil Shaikh has stood as a beacon of dedication, resilience, and compassion within the Pakistani American community in New York. A prominent social advocate, businessman, and community leader, Shaikh’s unwavering commitment to uplifting others has left an indelible mark on countless lives, bridging cultural divides and fostering unity in times of crisis and celebration alike.

A Legacy of Community Leadership

Shakil Shaikh’s journey of service began long before he became a household name. Arriving in New York in 1985 with just $6,000 in his pocket, he worked tirelessly—starting as a gas station attendant, then in electronics, and later driving a limousine—before co-founding Freedom Line Insurance in 2003. His entrepreneurial success, however, never overshadowed his dedication to community empowerment.

Shaikh’s leadership came to the forefront after the tragic events of 9/11. Recognizing the heightened challenges faced by Muslim and South Asian communities, he organized town hall meetings, outreach programs, and advocacy efforts to address systemic issues, support undocumented immigrants, and combat discrimination. His efforts helped restore trust and collaboration between marginalized communities and city, state, and federal authorities.

Championing Education, Culture, and Inclusion

One of Shaikh’s most celebrated achievements is his pivotal role in securing Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as official holidays in New York City public schools. Collaborating with education officials and community leaders, he advocated tirelessly for this recognition, ensuring Muslim students could celebrate their traditions without academic penalty. This milestone not only validated the cultural identity of Muslim Americans but also set a precedent for inclusivity nationwide.

Similarly, Shaikh spearheaded initiatives to provide Islamic education for children in Queens, earning praise from parents and community members. His vision extended to organizing the annual Peace Walk in Jackson Heights, a flagship event by the Muslim Coalition of New York. This gathering has grown exponentially, uniting diverse communities under the banner of harmony and mutual respect.

Disaster Relief and Advocacy Beyond Borders

Shaikh’s compassion transcends geographic boundaries. After Hurricane Sandy devastated New York in 2012, he mobilized resources to aid affected families, ensuring equitable support for vulnerable populations. His advocacy also reached global scales: following earthquakes in Pakistan, he coordinated relief efforts to assist survivors.

Notably, Shaikh’s influence even impacted international diplomacy. In 2023, he led a delegation to Saudi Arabia, advocating for the release of Pakistani nationals imprisoned for minor violations. His efforts, communicated to Pakistani officials like Zulfi Bukhari and Ambassador Raja Ali Ijaz, culminated in a royal decree by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, securing freedom for dozens of prisoners.

A Voice for Small Businesses and Civic Engagement

As a successful entrepreneur, Shaikh understands the struggles of small business owners. He tackled local challenges head-on, such as resolving parking restrictions on Broadway roads in Jackson Heights—a victory that revitalized commerce for Pakistani merchants. His insurance brokerage, Freedom Line, has also become a cornerstone of financial security for the Pakistani American community.

Shaikh’s dedication to civic engagement is equally remarkable. He has organized voter registration drives for South Asian Americans, empowering them to participate actively in democracy. His role in events like the annual Pakistan Day Fair further strengthens cultural pride and solidarity.

Personal Journey and Vision

Born in Lahore, Pakistan, Shaikh’s humble beginnings shaped his empathetic worldview. Now a father of two sons, Muhammad Yousuf and Muhammad Abdullah-Kavin, he emphasizes the importance of education and community values. His two son one Kevin compete US Congress election from Nassau County two years ago.
