Traffic Begins on Pakistan’s First Electricity-Generating Road: Route 47 Opens in Lahore

Pakistan has taken a significant step towards sustainable infrastructure with the inauguration of its first electricity-generating road, officially named Route 47, in the heart of Lahore. This ultra-modern roadway, which connects the bustling Kalma Chowk to Walton, has been opened for traffic and is already being hailed as a model of eco-friendly urban development.

What sets Route 47 apart from conventional roads is its ability to generate electricity through the use of integrated solar panels. The panels, installed alongside and above the road, have a power generation capacity of up to one megawatt, making it a landmark achievement in Pakistan’s efforts to adopt renewable energy solutions within public infrastructure.

According to officials, the electricity produced will primarily be used to power street lights, traffic signals, pedestrian crossings, and possibly even nearby public buildings. Speaking at the opening ceremony, a senior official from the Punjab government stated,

In addition to its green energy capabilities, Route 47 is equipped with smart traffic management systems and state-of-the-art pedestrian safety features. For the first time in this region, intelligent pedestrian signals have been installed to ensure safe crossing at various points, catering to the needs of both pedestrians and differently-abled individuals.

The road has also been designed to enhance traffic flow between two of Lahore’s major urban zones, which were previously plagued by congestion and delays. Early traffic reports indicate that commuters are already benefiting from smoother transit and shorter travel times on the route.

Environmental experts have lauded the project, calling it a “game-changer” in Pakistan’s journey toward sustainable urban development. The project is expected to serve as a pilot model for similar smart roads in other major cities, including Islamabad, Karachi, and Peshawar.

With Route 47 now fully operational, Lahore continues to solidify its position as a forward-thinking metropolis embracing technology and sustainability — a direction that may soon become the standard across Pakistan’s growing urban landscape.
