Former Senator Bob Menendez Permanently Barred from Ever Holding Public Office in New Jersey After Bribery Conviction

New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin announced that former U.S. Senator Robert Menendez has been permanently barred from ever again seeking or holding any public office in the state following his federal corruption convictions.

In an order issued by New Jersey Superior Court Judge Robert Lougy, Menendez is now formally disqualified from any position of honor, trust, or profit under state or local government. The ruling further states that any future attempt by Menendez to run for office or accept public employment could result in fourth-degree contempt-of-court charges.

Menendez was convicted on July 16, 2024, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on multiple felony counts, including conspiracy to commit bribery, conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right, and conspiracy to commit obstruction of justice. He was subsequently sentenced to 11 years in federal prison in January 2025.

“Maintaining public confidence in our democratic institutions requires a clear message that officials who betray their oath and abuse their office will face lasting consequences,” Attorney General Platkin stated. “Far too many New Jerseyans have come to view corruption as an unfortunate norm in politics. Today’s court order reinforces that such conduct is neither routine nor tolerable, and it will carry severe, permanent repercussions.”

Evidence at trial showed that Menendez and his wife, Nadine Menendez, accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes — including gold bars, cash, a luxury car, and home furnishings — from 2018 to 2022 in exchange for the senator using his official influence to advance the interests of the bribe payers, including intervening on behalf of the government of Egypt.

The permanent disqualification action was brought by Deputy Attorney General Adam Klein under the direction of Corruption Bureau Director Jeffrey J. Manis and Office of Public Integrity and Accountability Executive Director Eric L. Gibson.
