Tragedy Strikes Oregon Elementary School
A 16-year-old gunman opened fire at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, killing three children and a teacher before being shot dead by a community member, local law enforcement said. The attack took place at Silver Rail Elementary School, located about 160 kilometres (100 miles) southeast of Portland.
According to Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz, the three children who died were aged five, eight, and 11. A teacher was also killed in the attack. In addition, a seven-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher sustained critical injuries and were transported to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend.
During an afternoon news conference, Chief Krantz identified the alleged shooter as a 16-year-old resident of Bend who was killed at the scene. The suspect has not yet been publicly named, and investigators are working to determine whether he had any prior ties or attended the school at any point.
Timeline of the Attack and Bystander Intervention
Emergency services began receiving calls for help at approximately 12:59 pm local time, with dozens of additional calls pouring in over the ensuing minutes. The initial call came from a motorist reporting being shot at multiple times by an individual armed with a long gun. The school went into lockdown shortly after at 1:01 pm.
Initial investigations indicate that the shooter forced his way into the building by firing at locked doors. Officers responding to the active shooter reports arrived to find that the assailant had already been shot.
“Moments later, an officer reported that a suspect had been shot by a community member who had seen the suspect enter the school and pursued him into the school and engaged him,” Chief Krantz stated. Arriving officers confirmed the suspect was dead, cleared the facility for additional threats, and rendered emergency aid to the victims.
Community Response and Official Statements
The families of the victims have been notified, and police evacuated classrooms, transporting students and staff by bus to a nearby church to reunite with their loved ones. The Bend-La Pine school district announced that all district schools would be closed on Friday following the tragedy.
“Please hold your children, hold your loved ones tight tonight,” said Steven Cook, superintendent of Bend-La Pine Schools. “We will get through this – but not yet. We must grieve for the loss of our community members.”
Bend Mayor Melanie Kebler expressed anguish over the event, noting that schools should remain safe havens for children. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek called on residents to support one another through the grief and praised the intervention of the unnamed bystander. “To the community member who heroically intervened to stop further loss of life, your actions carry a heavy emotional burden, and I just want you to know that my thoughts are with you as well,” Kotek said.
Federal authorities have joined the ongoing response. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Kash Patel confirmed on social media that the agency was on the scene to assist local law enforcement. US Senator Jeff Merkley and gun control advocate Gabrielle Giffords also issued statements offering condolences and calling attention to the ongoing crisis of gun violence.
Broader Context on School Gun Violence
The shooting at Silver Rail Elementary adds to a persistent pattern of gun violence at educational institutions across the United States. According to data tracked by Everytown for Gun Safety, there have been at least 100 incidents of gunfire on school grounds across the country in 2026. Meanwhile, the Gun Violence Archive has recorded 369 mass shootings nationwide over the same period, defined as incidents resulting in four or more victims injured or killed, excluding the suspect.
Local authorities emphasized that the police investigation remains active, and further details will be released as they become available.
