Muharram Observances Held in Carteret New Jersey

New York,  – Muharram Al-Haram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar and a sacred period in Islam, is being observed by Muslim communities across the United States.

In Carteret New Jersey, Syed Zain Abbas and the Imam Bargah New Jersey have organized gatherings and a procession. Dr. Allama Sakhawat Hussain Sundaralvi delivered a special address. Community members and Organizers made special arrangements for blessings and Niyaz (charity food) were openly available reflecting established traditions. Similar observances are occurring in New York today.

Events are also taking place at the Al-Mahdi Center in New Jersey. Chaudhry Imtiaz and over 20 other Imam Bargahs throughout the state, including the Al-Khoei Center, are organizing gatherings and processions.

The first Muharram procession in Manhattan will occur this Sunday. On the 10th of Muharram (Ashura), processions are planned at the Mahdi Center, the Al-Khoei Center, and Malik Bank. Daily gatherings will continue for 13 days at the Al-Mahdi Center.

Senior Pakistani journalist Syed Shahbaz, based in New York, stated that these observances honor the memory of the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) grandson, Imam Hussain (AS), the martyrs, and prisoners of Karbala. He emphasized that both Shia and Sunni believers participate in commemorating these events, expressing gratitude for the preservation of their faith. Shahbaz also voiced hope for the peaceful continuation of these traditions.

Regarding recent incidents in Brooklyn and other centers, Shahbaz condemned any disruptions and appealed to authorities for enhanced security measures to prevent future issues.

Muharram marks the Islamic New Year and holds deep significance for Muslims worldwide. The 10th of Muharram (Ashura) commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) in Karbala. Islamic tradition also associates this day with other significant events, including the acceptance of Prophet Adam’s (AS) repentance and Prophet Ibrahim’s (AS) salvation from fire. Fasting during Muharram is considered highly virtuous after the fasts of Ramadan.
The small town in New Jersey Carteret has become the Center of religious ceremonies . Young community activist Mr Zain Shah played a remarkable role bringing Muslim Shea Community together . He observes Youm e Ashura every year with thousands of Muslims with great discipline. The local County and law enforcement protects the road walk and local community also provides water and refreshments .
