United Nations: Condemning the latest gang attack in Kenscoff, Haiti, Pakistan has called on the international community to address logistical challenges impeding the timely and full deployment of the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) in support of Haitian-led security efforts.

Speaking at the United Nations Security Council emergency meeting on Haiti, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, said the latest attacks were a grim reminder of the protracted and precarious security situation facing the Haitian people, which has seen little improvement over the years.

“The latest incident is a grim and stark reminder of the long-drawn security situation faced by the Haitian people, with atrocious attacks by gangs targeting civilians that disproportionately affect women and children,” he said.

While noting that the Security Council had authorized the deployment of the GSF last year to support the Haitian authorities, the Ambassador stressed that its timely and full deployment, alongside concerted efforts to stem the flow of illicit weapons into Haiti, was critical to effectively deterring gang violence and restoring a sense of security among the population.

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad also called for strengthened international cooperation to support Haiti during this challenging period. He maintained that a durable and sustainable solution requires addressing the underlying and multifaceted drivers of instability through a Haitian-led and Haitian-owned process.

“We take note of the Standing Group of Partners’ efforts to mobilize support for the GSF and assist Haiti in advancing a comprehensive DDR strategy to address the root causes of prolonged violence,” he remarked.

Pakistan reaffirmed its solidarity with the people of Haiti and reiterated its commitment to playing a constructive role in supporting international and Haitian-led efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace, stability, progress, and prosperity in the country.
