Indian Defense Minister

Skardu, Gilgit-Baltistan – May 29, 2025k – Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh’s recent claim that Skardu will soon be merged with India has triggered widespread anger and condemnation among the local population. The statement has further heightened tensions in the already sensitive region.

Local Residents Reject Indian Claims

The people of Skardu, a picturesque city in Pakistan-administered Gilgit-Baltistan, have strongly opposed Singh’s remarks, calling them an unjustified and provocative assertion. Many locals view the statement as a direct challenge to Pakistan’s sovereignty over the region.

“We are Pakistanis, and Skardu has always been an inseparable part of Pakistan,” said a local elder. “Such irresponsible statements only fuel hostility and threaten peace in the region.” Another resident warned, “India should focus on its own issues instead of making baseless claims. If they try to disrupt our peace, they will face a strong response.”

Historical and Strategic Significance

Skardu has been under Pakistan’s administrative control since the region’s liberation by local freedom fighters following the partition in 1947. The area holds immense strategic importance due to its location near the disputed Jammu and Kashmir region. Both India and Pakistan have long-standing territorial disputes over Kashmir, and statements like Singh’s often escalate tensions.

Political Reactions and Diplomatic Tensions

Political analysts suggest that the Indian defense minister’s statement may be aimed at rallying domestic support ahead of upcoming elections in India. However, the provocative nature of the remarks has drawn sharp criticism from Pakistani leaders and regional activists.

While the Pakistani government has yet to issue an official response, local political figures and civil society groups are urging Islamabad to take a firm stance against what they call India’s “expansionist rhetoric.”

Calls for Restraint and Dialogue

Amid rising tensions, there are growing calls for both nations to exercise restraint and prioritize diplomatic solutions. The people of Skardu have made it clear that they stand firmly with Pakistan and reject any external claims over their homeland.

As the situation unfolds, the international community watches closely, hoping for de-escalation and peaceful dialogue to prevent further instability in the region.
