Noorani Foundation Boarding School: Transforming Lives in Rural Pakistan
In the heart of a village called Bardi, approximately 20 kilometers from Faisalabad, Pakistan, stands the Noorani Foundation Boarding School—a beacon of hope for underprivileged children from across the country. Established with a mission to provide not only education but also character-building and discipline, this institution is redefining opportunities for children from marginalized communities.
Introduction to Noorani Foundation School
The Noorani Foundation Boarding School was launched in June 2020, with classes commencing in October 2021. Built at a cost of approximately 18-20 crore PKR (fully furnished), the school is a low-cost model designed to deliver high-quality education and training. In today’s economy, constructing a similar facility would cost around 50 crore PKR. With a capacity for 320 students, the school is divided into four houses—Abu Bakr, Umar, Ali, and Usman—each housing 80 students. Catering to grades 8 through 12, admission is granted through a written test and interview, with fees tailored to parents’ financial capacity, starting at a minimum of 1,000 PKR per month. For the poorest students, education is provided free of charge.
Structured System and Facilities
The school operates on a highly disciplined daily schedule:
Morning: The day begins before Fajr prayer with Quranic recitation, followed by physical training, breakfast, and classes until 1:00 PM.
Afternoon: After Zuhr prayer, students get an hour of rest, followed by 1.5 hours of study, Asr prayer, and sports activities.
Evening: Maghrb prayer, a short break, dinner, Isha prayer, and study until 11:00 PM, when lights go out.
The school offers nine sports, with a swimming pool and gym under construction, enhancing its holistic approach.
Honesty Shop: A unique initiative, the Honesty Shop encourages financial responsibility and integrity. Students use coupons (300 PKR weekly and 100 PKR monthly) to purchase items, placing the equivalent coupon value in a box, fostering trust and accountability.
Vision and Mission
The Noorani Foundation aims to establish similar low-cost boarding schools in all 120 districts of Pakistan, ensuring that children from impoverished backgrounds receive quality education and training. The philosophy is clear: break the cycle of poverty where a poor man’s child remains poor and a laborer’s child remains a laborer. By equipping students with education, skills, and values, the school seeks to transform them into valuable assets for the nation. Fundraising campaigns in London and the USA have garnered significant support, reflecting global appreciation for this transformative project.
Student Success Stories
The school’s impact is evident in the stories of its students:
Akmal Khan (Grade 10, Balochistan): Hailing from a remote area, Akmal aspires to become a CSS officer. He credits the school’s scientific and technical curriculum for his second-place achievement in a robotics competition and praises facilities like playgrounds, a dispensary, laundry, and uniforms.
Ammar Ali (Grade 9, Nasirabad, Balochistan): The son of a poor farmer, Ammar passed the school’s entrance exam and joined three years ago. His personality has transformed, and he has become an accomplished sportsman with ambitions to become a CSP officer.
Ishaq Ali (Dera Ghazi Khan): Once shy, Ishaq is now a top student with 97.25% marks in his matric exams. A senior prefect and skilled in English speaking, sports, and extracurricular activities, he exemplifies the school’s success in building confidence and leadership.
Future Plans
The Noorani Foundation plans to expand by establishing another boys’ school near Swabi and a girls’ school in the outskirts of Lahore. The administration is also working on partnerships with universities and professional institutions to secure bright futures for its graduates, ensuring they become exemplary citizens of Pakistan.
Challenges and Support
Thus far, the project has faced no significant obstacles, enjoying widespread support from communities and overseas Pakistanis. Led by founder Tasleem Noorani, alongside patrons like Air Marshal (Retd.) Arshad Malik and Principal Tariq Saleem, the school is seen as a national mission. The team believes that replicating this model across every district could reshape Pakistan’s future.
