UK Lifts Long-standing Ban on Pakistani Airlines
By Waqar Malik

The United Kingdom has lifted its long-standing restrictions on Pakistani airlines. According to the British High Commission, Pakistani airlines can now apply to operate flights to the UK. However, the airlines must obtain operational approval from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (UK CAA) before commencing any services.
British High Commissioner Jane Marriott stated that the removal from the safety list was conducted through an independent and technical process. She added, “I look forward to flying with Pakistani airlines. Traveling with PIA is a delightful experience.” She emphasized that improved air connectivity with Pakistan will help reunite families and provide the community with more enjoyable travel opportunities.
It is important to note that in May 2020, following the tragic crash of a PIA aircraft in Karachi, Pakistan’s then-Minister for Aviation informed Parliament that one-third of the country’s commercial pilots were holding bogus licenses. This revelation led to the UK and EU banning Pakistani carriers from their airspace in June 2020.
Thanks to persistent efforts by the Pakistani government, the European Union lifted its ban in November last year. Now, the UK has followed suit. Much of the credit goes to Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the UK, Dr. Mohammad Faisal, who worked tirelessly on this matter. He had previously informed the community at various events that PIA would resume flights to the UK by August 2025. The overseas Pakistani community has widely appreciated Dr. Faisal’s efforts in achieving this milestone.
The Pakistani community in the UK has also praised British High Commissioner Jane Marriott, who is based in Islamabad, for her efforts. She is known for her friendly nature, deep empathy for the people, and consistent support for public welfare initiatives.
