Bushra Iqbal Malik is a distinguished Pakistani writer, educator, and literary organiser. She completed her Master’s degrees in Urdu Literature, Journalism, and Education (B.Ed.) at the University of Peshawar, Pakistan. She began her professional career at Beaconhouse School, Peshawar, before moving into literary activism and institutional development.
In 1994, she founded the Pak Women Writers Forum (PWWF) in Peshawar, a pioneering platform dedicated to nurturing women’s literary voices across Pakistan. Building on this initiative, she established the Young Women Writers Forum Pakistan (YWWFP) in 2008, which has since expanded to chapters in multiple cities. These chapters function as vibrant offshoots of the original PWWF, fostering literary engagement among emerging women writers nationwide.
Bushra gained wide recognition as a drama writer; her acclaimed television serial “Inhi Patharon Pay Chaal Kay” became a cultural landmark and remains well remembered as a major media success.
In 2001, she relocated to Germany as an Urdu language instructor and joined the University of Erfurt, where she taught until 2009. Since 2010, she has been affiliated with the University of Bonn and contributes regularly to the Urdu Language Summer School programmes in Germany, an initiative connected with Heidelberg University.
Bushra is also an accomplished short-story writer. Her first anthology, “Hayat-e Nawyafta” (Renaissance), is dedicated to the women of Pakistan. Her second collection, “Majma‘ ki Dusri ‘Awrat” (The Other Woman of the Crowd), was published by Pakistan’s prestigious publishing house Sang-e Meel in 2019. She has recently launched a major intellectual project on feminism titled “Tanisiyat ka Naya Dawr” (The New Phase of Feminism). The first book in this series, “Naya Aslub, Nay ‘Awrat (Aik Baith)”, is scheduled for publication in November, offering a new dialogical platform for exploring contemporary womanhood in Pakistan. Several of her short stories have been translated into German.
Committed to social change through literary engagement, Bushra believes that even a small group with conviction and dedication can transform society. Based in Germany, she continues to mentor and inspire emerging writers in Pakistan and the Pakistani diaspora.
