New York City – New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani signed a significant executive order on Friday aimed at reinforcing the city’s longstanding “sanctuary city” status and protecting immigrant residents from federal immigration enforcement.

The executive order was signed during the annual Interfaith Breakfast held at the New York Public Library, an event focused on unity among faith communities. In his remarks, Mayor Mamdani strongly criticized the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), describing it as a “rogue agency” and a “manifestation of the abuse of power.” He called for its abolition and condemned what he termed “cruelty that staggers the conscience” in current federal immigration policies under the Trump administration.

Key provisions of the executive order include:

  • Prohibiting ICE agents from entering any city-owned property—such as schools, hospitals, shelters, and other public buildings—without a judicial warrant signed by a judge.
  • Directing city agencies to refrain from sharing sensitive data or personal information about immigrants with federal immigration authorities, except where required by law.
  •  Reaffirming and bolstering existing sanctuary laws by mandating audits of agency compliance, new training for city employees, and the establishment of an interagency committee to coordinate responses to potential escalations in federal enforcement actions.
  •  Launching a citywide “Know Your Rights” campaign to inform immigrant communities in multiple languages.

The move comes amid a broader federal immigration crackdown initiated by the Trump administration, with increased enforcement operations nationwide. Mayor Mamdani emphasized that the order protects not only immigrants but enhances public safety for all New Yorkers by maintaining trust between communities and local government.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) swiftly condemned the executive order, calling it an obstruction of federal law and accusing the city of shielding “criminal illegal aliens.” DHS officials urged Mayor Mamdani to cooperate with ICE detainers and warned that such policies could make communities less safe.

This executive order reaffirms New York City’s commitment to limiting cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, a policy that has been in place for years but is now being strengthened in response to heightened federal activity.
