Last night, the Overseas Pakistani Global Foundation (OPGF) partnered with the Bangladeshi community in Jackson Heights to host a community awareness program focused on legal rights and protections for immigrants.
The event, held in the heart of Queens’ diverse South Asian neighborhood, brought together Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Indians, and other participants. Attorneys and rights advocates spoke on key issues, including how to handle harassment, workplace concerns, and other challenges faced in daily life. They shared practical advice on legal options and support available under U.S. laws.
The Chairman of OPGF Zaheer Ahmed Mehar addressed the crowd, calling for stronger collaboration among local groups. He emphasized working together with South Asian (“South ASEAN”) communities, Bangladeshi organizations, and others to support Pakistanis and the wider diaspora in America. He highlighted the important role South Asian Americans play in society and the need for unity to address current issues.
Around 10 community leaders from different backgrounds joined the discussion, helping raise awareness about ongoing challenges like harassment and exploitation.
This joint initiative by the Bangladesh Queen Community Overseas and OPGF aimed to empower residents with knowledge and resources. Such programs strengthen community ties and help immigrants navigate life in New York more safely and confidently.
OPGF, based in the area (with activities in Woodside and Jackson Heights), continues its efforts in community service, education, and advocacy for overseas Pakistanis.
For updates on future events or resources, locals can reach out to OPGF or nearby South Asian community organizations in Jackson Heights.
