Ustad Hamid Ali Khan and the Patiala Family

Ustad Hamid Ali Khan is a legendary Pakistani ghazal and classical singer, and the torchbearer of the illustrious Patiala Gharana. This musical lineage is revered across the subcontinent for treating music not just as a profession but as a form of worship, producing rare gems and shining stars of classical music.

He is the son of Ustad Akhtar Hussain Khan, the younger brother of the unparalleled Ustad Bade Fateh Ali Khan and Ustad Amanat Ali Khan. The text recalls a time on PTV’s “Raag Rang” program when a young Hamid Ali Khan was still honing his craft under the guidance of his elder brothers. Through years of dedicated practice (*riyaz*), he eventually earned the esteemed title of “Ustad.” His voice is noted for its sweetness, rhythmic precision, and mastery of *taans*, a testament to his deep dedication.

The Patiala legacy continues through the next generations. Ustad Hamid Ali Khan’s three sons (Nayab Ali Khan, Wali Hamid Ali Khan, and Inam Ali Khan) have formed a band called “Raga Boys.” From Ustad Amanat Ali Khan’s lineage, his sons Asad Amanat Ali Khan (who passed away at the peak of his career in 2007) and the very famous Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan are also celebrated stars, all having received the gharana’s rigorous classical training.

Ustad Hamid Ali Khan is a versatile maestro, capable of performing a single *raga* for hours and excelling in ghazal, semi-classical, and Sufi music. He has numerous albums and has performed live worldwide to great acclaim, including a recent 2024 concert in Dallas, Texas, where the audience was so enthralled they showered him with dollars.

A notable highlight of his career was providing the singing voice for the main character in PTV’s historic serial “Tansen,” alongside singer Naira Noor. He also shared an anecdote about performing in India with his cousin Asad Amanat Ali Khan. Initially underestimated due to their youth, their performance stunned the audience, including legends like Dilip Kumar and Manoj Kumar, leading to praise from then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and an offer of permanent residence from Atal Bihari Vajpayee, which they declined.

Awarded the Pride of Performance (2007) and Sitara-i-Imtiaz (2010), Ustad Hamid Ali Khan is a shining star of Pakistani music, a pride of his gharana, and an inspiration for future generations.
