A Vision for Jersey City: Affordability, Services, and Protecting Our Community

Tom Zuppa, running Council person here in Ward C, Jersey City , New Jersey hosted an Event in Heights Meet & Greet on Wednesday at Beauty Within Hair Salon (96 Central Avenue ) He talked about the future of Jersey City ,plan for a more affordable neighborhood, cleaner and safer streets, and improved quality of life.
The local neighbourhood community activities , social workers, land lords and media people participated.

At a recent community gathering, Zuppa delivered clear message about the pressing issues facing Jersey City residents and the vision needed to address them. The conversation centered on rising costs, declining services, and the fundamental values that make the city a home for all.

The core of the discussion was a stark contrast: while the cost of living has increased dramatically, the quality of city services has steadily declined. Homeowners have felt the pinch for years through steadily rising taxes. Despite political promises to the contrary, the financial burden on residents has grown, sometimes through less obvious means.

The Municipal Utilities Authority (MUA) was cited as a prime example. Though technically an independent agency, it functions as a city entity. Four years ago, the MUA implemented what was described as a “backdoor tax” on trash and water services—a cost that was directly felt by homeowners as an effective city tax. This increase has not translated into better service. Residents report a noticeable reduction in the quality of essential services, from trash pickup to a broader neglect of quality-of-life issues.

A significant concern is the direction of housing development. The current trend favors luxury housing, which threatens to erase the blue-collar, middle-class character that has long defined Jersey City’s neighborhoods. The goal, speakers argued, should be to ensure people can afford to not just live here, but to put down roots and advance their lives. This means prioritizing planning for real housing where people can buy condos or homes, not just expensive rental units that cater to a transient population. This issue affects everyone, whether they are renters facing skyrocketing costs or homeowners struggling with their tax bills.

A Collaborative Leadership Approach

The event also highlighted a collaborative spirit in local politics. The speaker, running for Ward Councilman, emphasized his alignment with Bill O’Day, a candidate for mayor with nearly 40 years of advocacy experience as a councilman. This partnership is built on a promise of bringing immediate attention to ward issues and fostering a team of independent thinkers who are unafraid to speak their minds on critical matters.

A powerful portion of the dialogue addressed national issues at the local level. The Tom Zuppa speaker, identifying himself as a lawyer, expressed deep concern over the Trump administration’s approach to the rule of law and due process. He firmly stated that the Constitution and Bill of Rights apply to every person in the country, regardless of their immigration status.
Zuppa outlined concrete actions a city councilperson can take to protect residents:
Informing the Public: Partnering with offices like Congressman Menendez’s to ensure residents know their rights when encountering federal agents.
Multilingual Outreach: Distributing “Know Your Rights” flyers in multiple languages—including Spanish, Arabic, Hindi, and Gujarati—particularly in diverse hubs like Journal Square and The Heights.

Maintaining Sanctuary Status: Emphasizing the critical importance of Jersey City maintaining its sanctuary city status. From a perspective of having worked with law enforcement as a county prosecutor, he argued that city employees should not be compelled to assist federal agents with actions that contradict the city’s values. Jersey City, he reminded the audience, is fundamentally an immigrant city, and its story is an immigrant story.

The event concluded with a call to refocus on the community’s core needs: clean and safe streets for all residents including their pets and a government dedicated to affordability, service, and the protection of every individual’s rights.
