Former NJ Governor McGreevey Joins Pakistan Day Festivities, Surprises Crowd with Tabla Performance

JERSEY CITY, NJ – A vibrant Pakistan Day celebration, organized by the Jersey City Block Association and the international journalists’ organization Fourth Pillar, brought together community members, dignitaries, and cultural icons in Jersey City this week.

The event saw notable attendees including members of the New Jersey State Legislature, former Governor Jim McGreevey, and Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar. American legislators formally extended congratulations to the Pakistani-American community on Pakistan Day.

Former Governor McGreevey highlighted Pakistan’s global significance during his remarks. “Relations between the US and Pakistan have improved,” McGreevey stated, adding, “Pakistan is not only important for the United States but for the entire world.” He strongly advocated for increased trade between the two nations. McGreevey remained engaged throughout the ceremony, culminating in a surprising moment where he joined renowned Pakistani singer Ustad Hamid Ali Khan on stage, playing the tabla to accompany national songs, much to the delight of the audience.

Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US, Asim Munir, drew parallels between the two nations. “Last month we celebrated America’s Independence Day, and today we are celebrating Pakistan’s Independence Day,” Ambassador Munir said. “Both countries believe in freedom, unity, faith, and discipline.”

Dr. Rafique Chaudhry, the event organizer, expressed gratitude to all participants and led a prayer for global peace. The celebration was further elevated by captivating performances of national songs by the legendary Ustad Hamid Ali Khan.

The festive atmosphere was enhanced by food stalls managed by women and students, while the entire block was adorned with green and white Pakistani flags and bunting, creating a vivid display of community pride and unity.
